2012 NFL Draft Review – Why?

With 253 available picks in the draft, and the existence of the Cleveland Browns, there was bound to be some stupidity over the course of those three days.  So, in no particular order, here are some of the dumbest moves of the draft.

Jacksonville Drafts a Punter in the 3rd Round:Jacksonville Jaguars draft california punter in 3rd round

What? Why? Just, why? There’s no reason to do this! AHHH! Jacksonville has SOOO many other needs! The only position they don’t need help on is RB!  It’s like they are planning to be bad, so they can punt a lot and justify this pick.  If your team is good, the punter isn’t out there much, if your team is bad, that’s when you need a good punter.  I realize that they are bad already, but drafting a punter in the 3rd round is resigning to that fact.  Here are some of the players they passed on:

  1. Mohamed Sanu – WR, Rutgers – Victim of the greatest prank of all time, a prank phone call telling him he’d been drafted by the Bengals, then, later, actually drafted by the Bengals.  Sanu had 115 catches for 1206 yards and 7 TDs in 2011.  His 115 receptions broke Larry Fitzgerald’s single season record for most catches in a season in the Big East.
  2. Mike Martin – DT, Michigan – 2 time All Big Ten 2nd team.  Can bench press 505 lbs and squat 700 lbs.  Former wrestler, recorded 172 tackles at Michigan, including 64 his senior year.  Ran a 4.88 second 40 yard dash.
  3. Nick Toon – WR, Wisconsin – Finished college career with 170 catches for 2447 yards and 18 TDs.  His senior year, he had 64 catches for 926 yards and 10 TDs.  Ran a 4.54 second 40 yard dash.

2012 NFL Draft Review – Building the Monster

So the 2012 NFL Draft is over (finally), and, its official, Andrew Luck is an Indianapolis Colt.  After months of waiting, the Colts can now officially move forward.  So, here’s a bit of a summary of the Colts’ picks.

#1 overall, round 1. QB Andrew Luck, Stanford.

Andrew Luck Indianapolis Colts QB 2012 NFL DraftAndrew Luck is the real deal, and apparently the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Universally hailed as the best prospect since, ever.  Or at least since another Stanford QB, John Elway in 1983 (who the Colts also drafted, although that didn’t turn out well, as Elway refused to play and threatened to play baseball rather than play for the Colts).

As a redshirt freshman, Luck threw for 2575 yards and 13 touchdowns, while running for 351 yards and 2 TDs.

His “sophomore” year, Luck threw for 3338 yards and 32 TDs, completing 70.6% of his passes, finishing with a QB rating of 170.2.  He was widely projected to be the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, but (thankfully) decided to return to Stanford for one more year and the chance to chase a national championship.

In his redshirt junior year, Luck threw for 35 TDs, 3170 yards, completed 70% of his passes and finished with a QB rating of 167.5.

Luck was twice the runner up for the Heisman Trophy, first to Cam Newton in 2011, then to #2 overall draft pick, Robert Griffin III, QB from Baylor.

At the combine, Luck ran a 4.67 second 40 yard dash, measured a 36″ vertical jump, and a 10′ 4″ broad jump.  Luck is 6′ 4″, 234 lbs.Andrew Luck's neck beard.

Luck also has the distinguished ability to grow the ugliest neck-beard ever.

Luck wore #12 at Stanford and will continue to do so for the Colts, interestingly following in the footsteps of his former college coach and former Colt Jim Harbaugh.

2012 NFL Draft Preview

NFL Draft Indianapolis Colts 2012 Andrew LuckThe next era of Indianapolis Colts football starts tomorrow at 8 PM EST at Radio City Music Hall, in New York City.  At that time (or shortly thereafter), the Colts will choose Andrew Luck to be the new face of the franchise, the new QB, the future.  But that’s been known for months – ever since the Colts finished with the league-worst 2-14 record.  So, beyond the #1 pick, what else happens tomorrow night (and Friday night, and Saturday)?

RG3 Redskins pick in 2012 NFL Draft

The all new RG3-burger. Probably more than 7g of fat.

Well, here we go:

#2. Redskins take Robert Griffin III to go along with the rebuilding of their team, after signing former Colt WR Pierre Garcon and former 49ers’ WR Josh Morgan.

2nd & 3rd Marvin Harrison annoucing Colts 2nd and 3rd round picksRounds: The Colts’ picks are being announced by former Colts WR, and future Hall of Famer, Marvin Harrison.  These will be picks #32 and #64 overall.

Possible 2nd Round (#34) Picks:

4/23/12: Updates & Non-News

I haven’t updated ColtsMonkey.com in a while… why? Two reasons:

1. I got married!

Andrew Luck Indianapolis Colts QB

2. Nothing has happened with the Colts.  Other people, like Indy Star and whatnot are reporting on what I like to call “Non-News.”

So, out of obligation, here is the “Non-News” that has recently occurred:

- 4/19/12: ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports that the Colts have officially notified Andrew Luck that he’ll be the #1 overall pick in the draft.

The Colts’ new QB

No, not Andrew Luck.  Adam Caplan from ESPN is reporting that the New York Jets just traded disgruntled QB Drew Stanton to the Colts.  Stanton was upset after being told he would be the backup, followed by the Jets trading for Tim Tebow.  Sort of ironic though.  Manning from Colts to Broncos, Tebow from Broncos to Jets, Stanton from Jets to Colts.  So the Colts sort of traded Manning for Stanton! Wait…

Probably the best part of this trade is that Drew Stanton can teach the rest of the Colts how to Dougie.

Tamme to…. (guess where!) Denver!

Jacob Tamme is leaving the Colts to follow the QB that made him look awesome a couple years ago.  The Denver Broncos just signed the TE for 3 years and $9m.

Also, in not-Colts-related news at all, Marion Barber, RB for the Chicago Bears, just declared his retirement, at the ripe old age of… 28.  After the Bears signed Michael Bush to be Matt Forte’s backup, Barber thought it best to retire, rather than keep going, even tho he’s definitely got some gas left in the tank.

Also, ESPN just released their first set of “power rankings,” with the Broncos at #8 and the Colts at #32, dead last, saying that the Colts could draft first again in 2013 and that Matt Barkley (USC’s QB) could be worth a lot in a trade.  Thanks ESPN….

Saturday to the Packers | Ryan Diem retires

Saturday joins Green Bay PackersFormer Colts center Jeff Saturday, rather than joining Peyton Manning in Denver as many had speculated, has decided to join the Green Bay Packers.  After former Packers center Scott Wells left for the Rams, the Packers were without an experienced starting center – thus the need for Saturday.

Saturday has been with the Colts for 13 years – since the beginning of his career.  According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts weren’t interested in keeping him as their center, although apparently they did offer him a front-office job within the organization.

Additionally, according to Jim Irsay on Twitter, long time Colts offensive tackle Ryan Diem is retiring and Guard Mike Pollack is leaving the Colts to sign with the Carolina Panthers.  This leaves the Colts pretty thin on the O-Line, with really only Anthony Castonzo at Left Tackle.  However, the Colts did sign Samson Satele recently, apparently to replace Saturday and start at Center.

Payton out 1 year for bounties

The NFL has suspended New Orleans Saints coach for 1 year, without pay and penalized the Saints two 2nd round picks (2012 & 2013).  Gregg Williams, the former Saints Defensive Coordinator and current St. Louis Rams Defensive Coordinator, has been suspended indefinitely.  Additionally, Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis is suspended the first eight games of the 2012 regular season and Saints assistant coach Joe Vitt is suspended 6 games, and fined $100k.  Oh, and the Saints organization is out $500k.

According to the NFL, the bounty system in New Orleans reached its peak in 2009, when the Saints went to, and won the Super Bowl over the Colts.  NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated:

“When there is targeting of players for injury and cash rewards over a three-year period, the involvement of the coaching staff, and three years of denials and willful disrespect of the rules, a strong and lasting message must be sent that such conduct is totally unacceptable and has no place in the game.”

This could definitely end the coaching careers of Gregg Williams and Sean Payton, or at least Payton’s tenure in NOLA.  However, the Rams lose their defensive coordinator, which stinks for them, but I guess that’s what you get when you hire someone like Gregg Williams.

Thankfully, Roger Goodell took the right approach, keeping the safety of the players #1.

Well this is awkward…

Yesterday, March 20th, 2012 marked a new day for the NFL.  Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos.  Weird.  QB Manning signs with Denver BroncosNo more blue and white – now its orange and blue.  The contract is for 5 years, $96m with $58m (thats 58 million dollars) guaranteed provided Manning passes a physical this time next year.  The contract makes him the highest paid player in the NFL, based on average pay per year.

Additionally, with his new team, according to fantasy football experts/statistics gurus/smarter-than-I-am-at-math people, over at numberFire, Peyton will throw for about 4,400 yards and 32 TDs.  Don’t know how accurate that’ll be, but its better than the 0 and 0 he put up last year after I rolled the dice and spent a 1st round pick on him…
